Newly released statistics show increases in rental costs across Switzerland, although in some cantons and cities rents are declining.

With cost of living a constant issue in Switzerland, a major study has shown where rents are on the rise and stable – and where they might be falling.

The statistics show that the lake you live on might influence more than just your view.

A slight decline

In Geneva, where rents officially the highest in the country, rental prices have fallen slightly – decreasing by -0.3 percent.

Another lakeside region, Neuchâtel, has seen the most significant decreases in all of Switzerland, with rents declining by -1.2 percent. Jura and Lucerne also saw a significant decline, with rents now 0.8 percent and 0.6 percent cheaper than they were last year respectively.

The study was completed over a year, taking into account rental costs from September 2018 to September 2019.

Where are rents rising?

In what is probably no surprise to residents of Switzerland’s largest city, rents are on the rise in Zurich. Rental costs increased by 0.4 percent over the period of the study, while Bern and Grisons also saw a 0.3 percent increase.

While Geneva has the highest rents on average across the entire city, Zurich is home to the most expensive neighbourhoods in the country – as revealed in a report completed by The Local in June 2019

Slight increases of 0.2 percent were seen in Schaffhausen and Ticino.
