It was an emotional morning as Honofre Chargualaf made his appearance in district court in an effort to have his sentence reconsidered
It’s been a long and arduous journey for Honofre Chargualaf who has served 25 years out of a 45-year sentence for a gun and drug possession conviction in 1996.
For years he and his family have been fighting to have his sentence reconsidered and today was the first day he and his family’s voices were heard.
Showing their support, his family flew in from the states in high hopes that today would be the day Honofre is freed. But the legal aspect of the reconsideration for sentencing was continued as all parties agreed more time was needed to prepare for the case.
District Court Chief Judge Francis Tydingco-Gatewood listened to the testimonies of Chargualaf’s family and friends.
One testimony was that of a man who was incarcerated with Chargualaf at LOMPOC Penitentiary in California for two years.
“Honofre has made significant changes in his life over the last 25 years. To the point where he would be a huge asset to society. The strength that he has carried over the years has poured forth over me since my release and it is because of him … he is one of the many reasons I choose to stay free these days. Because I would be doing no justice to those who are fighting for their freedom every day if I violated my terms and conditions and go back in,” the former inmate said.
For the last 25 years, Chargualaf has made the most of his incarceration taking the path towards rehabilitation and furthering his education in hopes that he can be a contributing member of society.
Today was the first time in 25 years that Chargualaf was surrounded by family and the short time he spent with them today, has kept him hopeful that one day he will be reunited with his family outside of the prison’s walls
The hearing on the reconsideration of sentencing was continued to Aug. 5 to allow the US Supreme Court case involving Rehaif vs the US to be ruled upon as the decision could affect Chargualaf’s sentencing reconsideration.
