Citizens traveled with the idea of following their route to the United States; however, their fellow citizens kept them locked in hotels, they took away their documents and money.
A Facebook post was the bait used by a criminal organization to convince people from India to travel to Ecuador as a step to reach the United States. To begin the journey, which ended with a promise of work in the North American country, citizens had to cancel between $ 5,000 and $ 10,000.
However, when the Indian migrants arrived in Ecuador they were captured and transferred to hotels and pensions in Guayaquil and Durán, in the province of Guayas.
There they remained locked and watched, the individuals removed the documents and asked for more money, an amount similar to the one previously canceled.
The time of confinement was between 15 and 20 days, maximum one month, depending on how long they could keep them. The Anti-kidnapping and Extortion Unit, attached to the National Directorate of Crimes Against Life (Dinased), captured six involved in this act: three Indians and three Ecuadorians, among the latter a woman. Carlos Mera, commander in charge of Zone 8 (Guayaquil, Durán and Samborondón), stated that the investigation was carried out for six months and that it was born as a result of the complaint of an affected person.
“When they ran out of money and could not keep them hostage they abandoned them to their fate. Some ended in begging. ” Fabricio Encarnación Torres, head of the Unase in Guayas, said the gang was committing the crimes of kidnapping, extortion, fraud and forgery of documents.
“The Ecuadorian citizens made the letters of invitation notarized so that the Indians could travel to Ecuador. They had a supposed legal office in a shopping center in the north of Guayaquil.
” The officer explained that during the raids documents were found that would be used to bring more victims. “So far we have three formal complaints, but social networks knew the cases of another 10 people.
That figure may be higher. ” One affected by this band, from whom she reserves her identity, denounced that the only time she was taken from the hotel for “a walk”, a man wanted to abuse her inside the vehicle. (I)
