Daria Gavrilova has endured another Fed Cup collapse, with a loss to unranked Nadiia Kichenok sending Australia’s Fed Cup clash with the Ukraine to a doubles do-or-die decider.

After a “shocker” in her singles loss on Friday against Marta Kostyuk, Gavrilova failed to recompose herself in a three-set, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 loss to the doubles specialist, almost a year since Kichenok’s last competitive singles appearance.

Gavrilova set her stall out early with a professional showing in the first set, only to come unstuck in the second by seeing her serve broken early as Kichenok levelled the rubber in Canberra.

Kichenok’s serve refused to cave in as mistakes became a common theme in Gavrilova’s game, and the Australian ultimately could not build on Ashleigh Barty’s 6-2, 6-3 singles win early on Sunday.

Barty was wary of 15-year-old Kostyuk following the prodigy’s breakout summer in this year’s Australian Open, and after the Ukrainian’s Saturday win over Gavrilova.

Barty broke Kostyuk’s serve in the opening game before racing away to a win that put Australia 2-1 up.

Casey Dellacqua will be joined by Barty on the doubles court for the final rubber of the tie as the doubles duo looks to seal a 3-2 win for Australia, which will see the team advance to the World Group play-offs in April.

Those play-offs will pit either Australia or the Ukraine against a World Group first-round loser for possible promotion to the Fed Cup’s top tier.

More to come.
